Divorce: Your Questions Answered

How much? How long? How to Start? These are three of the most common questions our family law attorneys are asked when it comes to the issue of divorce. You’ll find the answers below.

We offer a FREE initial telephone consultation to discuss your needs before you decide on initiating divorce proceedings. For more information, or to take us up on the offer, complete your details below and one of our professionals will contact you to make arrangements.

The cost of a divorce will depend on whether or not the divorce is unopposed (with a settlement agreement) or opposed.

Unopposed divorces cost between R8,500 and R12,000; whereas an opposed divorce can cost each party a few hundred thousand rand.

Our team can help you determine the best course of action.

An unopposed divorce can take up to 3 months, whereas an opposed divorce can take a few years to finalise – depending on the disputes between the parties.

Once we’ve begun consulting with you, we’ll be able to give you a realistic idea of the time process.

A divorce action is started when one spouse issues a summons at court against the other spouse, requesting the court to grant an order for a decree of divorce.

The summons will then be personally served on your spouse by the sheriff, and they will then have the option of either defending the divorce or to concede to the terms you requested.
